Physical characteristics of the aerosols observed at Anmyeon during the Asian dust at the spring season of 2005

Abstracts
Various aerosol concentrations concerning with mass and number were measured at KGAWO (Korea Global
Atmosphere Watch Observatory), Anmyeon, Korea during four Asian dust events observed at the spring season of
2005. Analyses of local meteorological measurements and 72-hour backward trajectories related the events are
included to characterize the transport patterns of the four Asian dust.
The results shows that total number concentration are generally decreased. Particles less than 1 ¥ìm for the
Optical Particle Counter (OPC) measurement are decreased during the main dust impact hours, but larger particles
are increased. Similar size distribution was observed for the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) measurement
except for the critical value of 100 nm.
Other interesting view of the ultrafine particle distribution is nucleation and particle growth, which is usually
observed in the coastal region such as KGAWO at clear day. This phenomenon was clearly observed at two Asian
dust events on March 2005, but it was not shown in the particle size distribution for other two cases on April 2005.
From the analyses of local meteorological components and 72-hour backward trajectories, the physical
characteristics of the aerosols are affected from the flow pattern of the wind and the upper synoptic situation,
which are dominantly effect on the long-range transport paths of the air mass contained various aerosols.
In this study, only four Asian dust events are considered to characterize the aerosols observed at KGAWO
during the spring season of 2005. The physical characteristics of the aerosols and its influence of the local and the
global climate changes hope to be clarified and generalized through more case studies of the Asian dust and
continuous measurements.
