The increasing concern of particulate matter (PM) on human health has created a need to measure not only the
mass concentration of particles but also the number based on size distribution of submicron particles. This paper
introduces real-time measurements of the diesel particulate matter (DPM) using a portable electrical low pressure
impactor (P-ELI). First, we designed and performed the evaluation of the P-ELI using an electrical method. Then,
measurement of DPM was performed on a Common-rail DI engine with the P-ELI at various engine operating
conditions. Regardless of engine RPM and load condition, the highest number concentration of DPM was obtained
for particles smaller than 100 nm. The data inversion algorithm brought out the improved number of DPM.
